By all accounts this should be a good film. There’s no end to the budget. There’s great action. There’s Denzel Washington. But, I just can’t get over the huge problem I have with the premise of the movie.
I mean if something is currently proven to be impossible, then at least spend some time researching a feasible explanation for why it is now possible! Rather than spring it on an unsuspecting audience without warning.
And that’s another thing. The trailer is nothing like the movie. It’s misleading.

Halle Berry cannot act (I have no idea why she won an oscar!). This is a poorly directed and poorly acted story about murder, I think.
It was really hard to tell what this was about. It’s convoluted and the ending looks like it was picked out of a pile of choices (apparently it was!). The story is not engaging - it didn’t keep my interest.

Calling this movie “cheesy” would be like calling gorgonzola mild. It is completely over-acted and was certainly directed that way. Perhaps the intention was to portray more of a “comic book” feel, however, although it is certainly comical in places, it doesn’t work.
They must have done screen tests before releasing the movie, but when the movie came to the “sad” parts of the story (e.g. when a character died), the audience laughed! It was meant to be a sorrowful moment - perhaps not.

Hard going and difficult to follow. The story revolves around two competing magicians, but most of the movie is the terrible things they do to each other. Some of the acting is weak and some of the accents are very “put on”. The crux of the story is not believable.
I think there should have been more magic and less maiming.

Film noir? No, film bore more likely. This was so confusing, I still am not sure what happened. It’s difficult to follow the story. The acting is very good, and perhaps if it hadn’t lost my attention in the first 15 minutes I might have watched it a bit more closely.

There are some great special effects and good action sequences. They obviously spent a lot of money making this movie, and there is certainly going to be a sequel.
But the acting is weak and it just didn’t grab my attention. Perhaps it was the lack of character development. Perhaps it was trying too hard to be like Lord of the Rings. I think the story-line is possibly a bit weak and there are gaping holes in the plot. Also, sometimes, it’s difficult to see what’s going on.

Actually this movie is well put together, but incredibly annoying. The reason for this is that the movie feels as though it is actually a stage musical that has been filmed. Very often, the actors break into song and this is tiresome. I found myself wishing it was over. And I can’t remember the ending.

Jack Black goes wild in this clever story about a guitar pick that is made from satan’s tooth! There’s so much swearing that I had to watch it with earphones on. It’s fun to watch though, even though it’s repulsive in most places.

The story sounds great, 4 wizard type youngsters using their magical powers against a 5th. But it’s poorly directed and there’s quite a bit of weak acting too. The story is extremely predictable - like one commentator said: “you don’t even need to watch it to know what happens.”
And another thing, it just didn’t seem to have any “meat”. There are all these promising bits in the story, but they touch on it all so briefly that it leaves you unsatisfied!
